So what I don't understand is a fact that, what is all the hoopla surrounding Ms Mirza's marriage with ex Pakistani cricket player and captain Shoaib Malik, all about? Ex player, because this not so gentle man is currently serving a one year ban on the grounds of indiscipline and poor performance, imposed by Pakistan Cricket board. As usual Ms Mirza has successfully grabbed all the headlines in last 2-3 days and will continue to do so for next fortnight or so, till her post wedding reception at Lahore or Dubai gets over in the most royal and media frenzy fashion. But the funny thing is that ,a section of our country is utterly furious about this wedding, and the likes of Bajrang Dal and some other extremist groups have even taken this marriage as an insult of our nation and gone on record to say things like, we won't let this marriage take place on this holy hindu land, as if this is the first time a cross border marital phenomena is taking place in history of mankind and these outfits are the legal adjudicators of all the marriages taking place in our country or their self proclaimed hindu land.Adding to the funnier side, few of my friends who have themselves been huge fan of Sania Madam, have turned into her biggest critics overnight, venting out their anger vociferously citing that can't she find a good lad in this country of 130 crores people that she had to select one from our not so favorite neighbor, now these guys are behaving as if Miss Mirza has dated all of them full time and all of a sudden decided to dump them all without giving any genuine reason, for marrying Mr Malik:). Now much to media's pleasure Mr Malik's credentials haven't been so good either, he has already married and dumped a Hyderabadi girl, Ayesha in 2002-2005, for alleged reasons of that girl having put on lot of weight (hahahahhaha). Goodness me, I don't know from which corners do these media guys get these stories, but this is what they want, infact I believe they would have been even happier if Mr Malik had a child or two with her ex wife or ex- bollywood flame Sayali Bhagat, too. That would have given them the luxury to twist and turn the story with a much larger ferocity.
But the mood in Pakistan is not so numb as it is in our side, infact as per the daily Jung newspaper of Pakistan, people out there are quiet happy with this story and they have even started celebrating this partnership already, rejoicing as if they have finally snatched Kashmir from India:). Infact with the volatile mood swings and behavior of our neighbors we shouldn't be surprised if the Pakistan Cricket Board lifts away the one year ban from Malik for having done their nation so proud by hooking up, Miss India fame Sania Mirza, as a symbol of a psychological victory over there arch rivals. And we shouldn't be surprised if Malik takes this opportunity of coming to India as a double gain scheme where he not only gets married to Sania over his week long visit but also manages to play a few games in the cash rich IPL-3, I guess after the Sania feather on their cap the Pakistan Government won't stop him from taking part in IPL-3, forgetting the embarrassing snub which Pakistani players received few months back in the IPL auction:). But the problem he might face will be that which franchisee will rope him in? In the present form I am sure only Kings X1 Punjab will take him in gleefully, hoping that he helps them break there losing streak:).
But what infuriated me the most is the manner in which Sania Mirza addressed the media to testify the rumors about her marriage, literally bashing them up saying 'this is not a India Pakistan joint political statement that you guys are so edgy about and don't worry I will keep on playing tennis for India till atleast 2012 olympics'. GOD! I just want to ask who the heck is really worried about you not playing for India now on because nobody cares about a 92 ranked player playing for his/her country or not and on the contrary never so for a person who is in the limelight more so for the losing reasons rather than the winning ones. With all due respect to your personal life, added with all the good wishes for a bright and a joyous married life, I as a common man and your big fan would just like to reinforce a fact that you are fortunate enough to garner so many eye balls and unprecedented attention from this super sporting nation because you are not the one who actually deserves all this, there are scores of others who are the real contender of this attention and support, so if you can't live up to our support and expectation, kindly don't mar them with your arrogance. Agreed that you are 100% correct that people should respect your privacy and not poke there noses in your personal life, as everybody has the right to live his or her life on his or her own terms. But if there are still doubts about the fact that why people admire her so much, let me clarify its certainly not her tennis skills that they admire rather it's her out of the box nose rings, super trendy spectacle glass frames, ultra mini skirts and those well toned thighs which have made them her big fans. Wish she can win a handful fans by virtue of her on field excellence too much like the likes of Paes' and Bhupathis, who have been doing this consistently for last 15 years or so.

I liked this line Kinshuk - "GOD! I just want to ask who the heck is really worried about you not playing for India".
ReplyDeleteMs.Mirza is really smart, she realized long back that she can't make it big and started making money the best way she can through watever way she can by playing that injury-card all through her career!
Saina Nehwal? - "This girl is really a hard-working one and surely destined to go places, purely with her on-court excellence"! Coincidentally her namz - SAINA! would make us forget SANIA sooner than we actually would like to!! :-)
Either way, shouldn't we all be happy for Sania?! "Jaise Ko Taisa" is all what comes to my mind right now!! ;-)
@Sreekanth, in facebook an american asked - why you all hate sania so much now.
ReplyDeletei mean, she used our resouces, and married our arch enemy a pakistani....
we would have least bothered even if she had married an Iraqi...but pakistani ..no ways...
Sriharsha?! I have no clue what you meant!!
ReplyDeleteI hope you didn't mean people are jealous of her marrying a Pakistani?? I said we are happy for her Question was not about nationality, its about character and moreover Ms.Mirza claiming to represent India till 2012 Olympics!
Well written Kinshuk...A 5 Star rating from me on this.....
ReplyDeleteWe are not jealous..ok..
ReplyDeletebut why, Pakistan is niot soft on us...we dont want any pakistani in our land...
check facebook pages...its full of those..a few people are talking about peace to sania..i dont wanna say anything here u read and will understand...pakistan was, is and will be an enemy nation to us.
FYI.....
ReplyDeleteMirza is the highest ranked female tennis player ever from India, with a career high ranking of 27 in singles and 18 in doubles. She is the first Indian woman to be seeded in a Grand Slam tennis tournament. She was the first Indian woman to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament at the 2005 U.S. Open, defeating Mashona Washington, Maria Elena Camerin and Marion Bartoli. In winning, with Mahesh Bhupathi, the mixed doubles event at the 2009 Australian Open, she became the first Indian woman to win a Grand Slam title.

I think suddenly you people have forgotten what Sania has done for our nation. She has given not just a glory to Tennis in India but the dreams to Indian girls to achieve success in every sports game. Every Indian girl is FAN of Sania because of her achievements not just the looks and attitude. Nobody can deny this fact that, if ever we start writing history about Indian Women’s Tennis the chapter will start from The Sania Mirza.
ReplyDeleteI may not be in support of her marriage decision but at same time I can't even forget her achievements…..
Thanks Sriharsha, Vinay, Sreekanth and Girish for your feedback and a lively discussion:)
ReplyDelete@ Dipali, Zaheer - Nothing against Sania personally, what all she has achieved in the world of tennis being an Indian is truly remarkable, but there is no denying the fact that she has not done justice to her talent and she has performed miserably in past few years, still living on the past laurels. And one can't disagree on the fact that she is more in the news because of her 1st or 2nd rounds exits from major tournaments rather than winning any significant tournaments. And as far as our Indian girls are concerned, we have far more successful and potent young sportsperson in the name of Saina Nehwal and few others in the world of atheletics, who have done much better than Sania, but they have hardly got there due when we talk of media coverage or pampereing from our nation. What say???
Don't know if this appropriate to bring this topic in this thread!! But couldn't stop myself either!!
ReplyDeleteWhy are we so obsessed with PAKISTAN?? It’s like I feel Pakistan is only the nation we are trying compete with and show we are superior to them!!
Well let me take back to hockey world cup, soon after India defeated Pakistan, well i started feeling that India’s hockey was on track and rather we could some miracle with this hockey team, then there was this post match talk by our indian player (if i am not wrong it must have been Deepak Takkur) , "we defeated Pakistan and now people will not worry if reach finals or not", well this was really disappointing for me cause till that point i had feeling that Indian hockey players were to prove some here cause they were the least ranked team going into the tournament !!!! Well not surprising to all other nations except for we proud Indians, the Indian hockey team never looked a winning any other match!!!
Now, we have this Sania-Malik saga, we go blah blah because it’s a matter of Pakistani marrying a Indian Girl, to be frank I was never a really fan of Sania and I never heard of making it far beyond 1 or 2 rounds. I know I am very very critical because we are so very used to see the dominating tennis played by others players representing their nations that we have started to ask why is that we don’t have players like this??
So, i really think we need to look beyond Pakistan, yes i know they are our not so "friendly" neighbour and we cant ignore of terrorism being sponsored by them, but then aren’t we planning to be a developed nation n a super power nation by 2020 and compete with best of nation be it in cricket, football, tennis, science n technology ??
Miss Mirza is actually in a soup now….with the controversy growing thick and no party backing out , the situation seems too tense…
ReplyDeleteI feel that ideally no one should pry into what Sania wants to do in her life…be it marriage or be it continuing with playing for India..its her basic right to do whatever she wants in her life..we should mature enough and this should not have been brought up in the media itself and thus she would not be pushed into making any statement.
Whatever little she has done in her sporting career, atleast she has done something wherein most of us do not even do that much..
She marrying anyone in this world in none of anyone concerns and people raising their concerns and disrupting lives by creating ruckus are the biggest fools on this earth. With nothing productive to do, they just vent out their frustrations.
Where the fans are concerned, I feel that they became her fans because of some reasons and if they feel that those reasons are no longer valid, they should just not follow her…I don’t understand why so much hoopla around this…
\Anyways a good read again from your end.
Oops, I think I am bit late in responding, but let me post it anyway :-)
ReplyDeleteGood info there Zaheer. Here are few FYIs from most of the people who know/follow tennis, which are actually credited as achivements - 1. Top 10 in Mens or Womens Singles 2. Atleast QuarterFinals (SemiFinals for Men) in a Grand Slam tournament 3. A Olympic Medal. Due to the fact that, most of the Top10 players do not play Doubles game, Mens Doubles (to an extent) and
Womens Doubles are least credited&\watched events, Mixed Doubles is further far from that list. The fact that Olympic Committee rejected MixedDoubles event from Medals tally speaks for itself how important it really is. Your intent is perfectly right "Something is better than Nothing", but we should be careful not to take that 'Something as Everything'.
Dipali, Good to know Indian women draw inspiration from Sania?! (though it actually sounds strange). I would rather hope women better look up to real heroes like P.T.Usha - Greatest Athlete India ever had, or if she is long forgotten, Saina Nehwal (currently ranked Top#5, QuaterFinalist in recent Olympics, 2010 All-England Open SemiFinalist and a true hope for 2012 Olympics) is a good idol to inspire from. I guess that book on Indian Tennis History quotes common achievements of both Men and Women, and they start it with Vijay Amritraj (Quarter Finalist in MnsSgls Wimbledon, US Open and SemiFinalist in MnsDbls Wimbledon) and come through someone who makes atleast to QuaterFinals in any of the GrandSlams rather than 2R or 3R crashing so-called achievers!
Kinshuk, I read few of your articles, this one ranks right up there. I like the way you cover the key details on your write-ups. You missed one small yet important detail though, about Sania's similar view to Khusboo's shameless quote. I am sure you are following the interviews of the trio on TV, Ayesha Siddiqui's statements, (slapstick) responses sound far sane than the other two. I you are to do another post on this hold it till April 15th as more things are unfolding.
P.S. I meant no disrespect to anyone by above info, I am not blindly against Ms.Mirza (she did the best she could, in fact in a way better than the best ) - I am against the 'undeserved' lulling for credit through misleading claims!
@ Prasanna - what do want us to do...why you dont understand that Paksitan is hell bent on destroying us. In fact we are not obsessed. According top Zardari , Pak President, Pak Inteillgence Agency and Army is India centic. This is obsession.
ReplyDeleteWe are not proviong that we are superior, but just the fact that we are getting ready.
and Its like someone has a neigbour next door who always curses you, abusues you ..one fine day his boy comes and says i wanna marry a girl in his family. Will you agree.
Abt Sania's onfield activities..oh please..i have almost forgotten when she cruised past 2 nd round...
@Dipali - So do u mean to say she was No 27 for a week we have to treat her like a queen all the time. She was always wanting to have attenetion on her.
What you have to say abour Ashinee Nachappa, Nisha Millet, Saina Nehwal who r just brilliant all the time and just look to bring glory to the country.
